What Not To Wear

I am an avid fan of the TLC show, "What Not To Wear." If you haven't seen the show, the premise is this: friends and family will nominate a person who dresses poorly and stylists Stacy and Clinton will surprise them with a $5,000 shopping spree. The catch is this: The nominee must first face the 360 degree mirror and see how she actually looks in the clothes she is currently wearing. Usually during this protion, the woman will give all sorts of excuses for her wardrobe. Stacy and clinton will then go through the clothes with her and throw them all away and give her new rules to shop by. In the end, the woman (or man) always ends up looking a million times better because Stacy and Clinton have shown her what looks best on her! I LOVE this show.

I was so excited to learn that the theme of our women's retreat this past weekend was "What Not to Wear." The difference was that we talked about it in a spiritual sense, although we did get to watch clips from the show! I have to say my favorite speaker of the weekend was my mother (a little biased I know). Her topic was the 360 degree mirror. She wanted us to take a good long look at ourselves and the excuses we give for the sins that we are currently wearing.

She talked about all of the excuses:

"It's Comfortable"- She spoke on the sins that we carry around with us simply because they are just comfortable. She specifically spoke of the sin of ungodliness, which she defined as "going through your day without thought to the things of God." This really challenged me. I would love to say that God is resounding in my thoughts all day and that I speak of the things of the Lord, but I don't. It was a very convicting time for me.

"It hides problems"- She spoke of the sins that we use to cover up the hurts of our past. She challenged the women that use their anger to cover up hurts.

"It's Sexy"- She spoke about the women who use sin to get attention. She talked about selfishness and constantly turning the conversation back to yourself. It definitely made me think twice about what I contribute to a conversation.

There were so many more things I learned on retreat but that is what stuck with me the most and I thought I would share it. I am a compelete dork and I totally forgot to take pictures! Bummer! But it truly was a great weekend!
